Main River Cycle Path

The Main Cycle Path is regarded as one of the prettiest and best constructed cycle paths in Germany. Bamberg and Aschaffenburg are the start- and endpoints of its most popular subsection - one of them is a UNESCO world heritage site, while the other is the glamorous seat of the Electorate of Mainz. You will be impressed by ample nature and viticulture alongside charming timber-framed houses. You should have a good level of fitness, therefore this tour is not suitable for small children.

Day 1 Arrival in the UNESCO City of Bamberg
Enjoy your first evening in the winding alleys of the historic centre with a hearty Bavarian beer.

Day 2 Bamberg - Schweinfurt, approx. 60 km / 37 mi
The tour leads to the pretty wine town of Hassfurt, Renaissance and modern buildings characterize the industrial center of Schweinfurt.

Day 3 Schweinfurt - Kitzingen, approx. 60 km/ 37 mi
Today's stage is very rural, worth seeing the medieval Kitzingen with beautiful churches and the synagogue.

Day 4 Kitzingen - Erlabrunn/Karlstadt, 50-65 km/31-40 mi
Explore the prince-bishop residence Würzburg with the Marienburg. A good opportunity to shop for top wine.

Day 5 Karlstadt - Marktheidenfeld, 50-65 km/31-40 mi
The route will lead you past the episcopal summer residence complete with a Rokoko garden. Slowly, the Spessart’s forest dominates the scenery in place of the vinyards.

Day 6 Marktheidenfeld - Bürgstadt/Miltenberg, 55km/34mi
The Main valley is now visibly tighter and deeper. Once in Wertheim, you will have reached Baden territory. Indeed, the town used to be nicknamed “The Siberia of Baden”.

Day 7 Miltenberg - Aschaffenburg, 40-45 km/25-28 mi
On today’s route you’ll see impressive timber-framed houses: the bishops of the Mainz electorate shaped this region with all their magnificent buildings.

Day 8 Departure or extension

The booking process

Arrival to "Main river cycle path":

• Parking in Bamberg:
  Car park, costs approx. 45 €/week. No reservation possible.
  Make use of one of the free parking spaces P&R on the outskirts of town. No reservation possible.

• Arrival via train:
  Train station: Bamberg Hbf

• Arrival at Frankfurt airport:
  by train to Bamberg, every hour, journey takes approx. 2,5-3,5 hours, 1 x change, train ticket price per person: approx. 30 €.

• Pre-booked rental bikes are ready for you at the hotel.

Return transfer:

• Return by Minibus (on wednesdays, saturdays and sundays):
  Collection at hotel, also incl. own bike, departure approx. 09:00 am, duration approx. 3 hours, must be booked together with holiday.

• by train (organised by you independently):
  Every 2 hours, duration approx. 2 hours, without change of trains, train ticket price per person: costs approx. 30 €.
